Oxford City & County Bowls Club

Welcome to the website of Oxford City & County Bowls Club based in Summertown, North Oxford.

The club was formed in 1932 and officially opened in 1933.  When opened the club had two outdoor green and clubhouse on land leased from St John's College.  A third outdoor green was added in 1950.  With the help of the members the freehold was bought in the mid 1970s.  In 1978 the original indoor green was built as three rinks but due to pressure of use it was changed to four narrower rinks.  In October 2002, after many years of planning, our new indoor bowling green and viewing area was opened.  This was build on the third outdoor green.  Its facilities are amongst the best.

Apart from its two outdoor greens and the six-rink indoor green, it has comfortable lounge/dining area, catering facilities (including lunch on many weekdays), a well stocked bar, new changing rooms with lockers and ample car-parking for members.

The friendly club matches are arranged by fixture secretaries and are published in the Outdoor and Indoor handbooks.  Other good opportunities to mix and meet with club members are: Tuesday night outdoor triples, Friday lunchtime indoor triples, Saturday night indoor triples and various functions such as Bingo, Whist, Christmas draw, Barbecues, Horse race nights, Theatre trips and regular informal dinners are organised to raise funds for the club.

Oxford City & County 75th Anniversary

The club celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2007.  One of several special matches was with the EBA (above).

In addition the watercolourist Ron Cosford did a commemorative painting ("Finals Day") which he donated to the Club: a limited edition print (200 copies) was made, some copies being presented to visiting Clubs and others being offered for sale to members. A few copies are still available for wider sale. Click here for details of the print by Ron Cosford.
